The vineyard cultural landscape

The present landscape of San Vicente is the result of a long process that has left many traces in both the territory and the local culture, the consequence of new realities and techniques being added to ancient traditions.

Many elements tell us about the historical relationship between territory, wine and culture: hermitage caves, churches, shrines, emblazoned houses, coats of arms, castles, bridges... The interaction between local humans and their environment also reflects on unique elements linked to the cultivation of the vine: ‘lagares’ (deposits where the grapes are placed for stepping and fermentation) dug into the rock, ‘guardaviñas’ or ‘chozos’ (stone huts used for shelter), wine cellars, old wineries, etc.

This ‘symbiosis’ has generated a traditional knowledge linked to the cultivation of vine and to winemaking: toponymy, proverbs, stories and legends, ethnographic elements linked to the world of wine, crafts and popular festivals.

San Vicente de la Sonsierra is, therefore, the story behind the dialogue between tradition and modernity, which you can discover by walking through its streets and cellars, exploring its historical and artistic heritage and, above all, by meeting its people.

Both the privileged natural environment for the cultivation of the vine (climate, soils, orography, the Ebro river...) and the long tradition of winemaking (there is evidence for the use of ‘lagares’ even from Roman times) make our wines very special.
